It was in 1640, following the royal edict on "the confinement of the poor and beggars", that the City of Marseille decided to build the Vieille Charité, to accommodate the beggars. It then designates land it owns, located near the Cathedral of the Major, on the northern slope of the Butte des Moulins. But the project stalled and it was not until 1670 that Pierre Puget, architect to the King and child of the neighborhood, began one of his greatest achievements.
In addition to this, you need to know more about it.
Today the Center de la Vieille Charité houses several multi-cultural structures: the Museum of Mediterranean Archeology, the Museum of African, Oceanian and Native American Arts (MAAOA), temporary exhibitions and a cinema hall, Le Miroir. The whole is managed by the Directorate of Museums of Marseille.
