The David statue

The statue of David in Marseille is a copy of the famous David by Michelangelo in Carrara marble kept in the Gallery of the Academy of Florence in Italy.

This reproduction was offered by the marble maker and sculptor Jules Cantini in 1903, it was then placed in 1949 near the Prado beaches at the intersection of avenue du Prado, promenade Georges Pompidou and avenue Pierre Mendès France in the 8th arrondissement of Marseille.

From its height of 4 meters, it is the perfect rallying point.

In Marseille, we meet at the David. Located at the Prado, not far from the beaches, it is the landmark that announces the sea, the beach, swimming but also surfing sessions!

The Mobiles Monument

In addition to this, you need to know more about it.

Located at the top of the Canebière (formerly called the “quincunx of the alleys of Meilhan”) in front of the Saint-Vincent de Paul church, the Monument des mobiles commemorates the thousand soldiers of the mobile guard, who were mobilized by the government during the Franco-German war of 1870-1871. It is an imposing and very elaborate work of which the foot, sculpted in stone by Jean Turcan in 1893, represents four groups of soldiers armed under the naked sword of France, imposing bronze sculpted by Constant Roux at the top of the monument.

Monument to the heroes and victims of the sea

The monument features three bronze sailors. One is standing and raises his arm, holding another ailing sailor, the third is drowned, carried by a wave which strongly tilts the sailors' boat and sweeps a granite reef.

Auguste Carli was chosen as a sculptor, but his model was not appreciated by marine workers.

A second committee was created in March 1914 and assigned the project to André Alexandre Verdilhan . The project was aborted with the outbreak of the First World War . The end of the war led to a desire to pay tribute to the sailors who died during the war, which revived the work. The monument was inaugurated on July 14, 1923 and is located in the garden of the Palais du Pharo, in the 7th arrondissement of Marseille, opposite Fort Saint-Jean.

Algerian repatriates memorial

The Algerian Repatriates Memorial has been freed from work. This large boat propeller blade, the work of sculptor César Baldaccini, was inaugurated in 1971. It symbolizes the crossing of the Mediterranean that the returnees had to make in 1962 to reach Marseille following the Algerian war of 1954 in 1962.
